International Day to End Obstetric Fistula

Obstetric Fistula, ever heard of it? Me neither. That is most likely because it has practically  been eliminated in most wealthy countries. However, there are around 2 million women affected by this condition in sub-Saharan Africa, Asia, the Arab region, and Latin America and the Caribbean.

Obstetric Fistula is a condition caused by pro-longed labour and leaves most women affected by it incontinent. Women really got the short straw, huh? I mean not only do they have to push a human being out of their vaginas the pleasure of doing so can leave them in need of adult diapers for the rest of their lives.

This condition is preventable and the fact that there are many women still affected demonstrates how health care systems all over the world so often fail to meet the health care needs of women. Access to obstetric care and delaying the age for first time pregnancies can prevent obstetric fistula.
